DMAIC Framework

A data-driven improvement framework for solving problems and improving processes. Originally part of Six Sigma.

Explanation

D — Define. Define the business problem: goals, resources, project scope, timeline.

M — Measure. Conduct performance metrics and data collection to establish baselines and measure success.

A — Analyze. Find root causes of problems and understand their impact.

I — Improve. Implement a reasonable solution to the problem.

C — Control. Stay on top of monitoring the updated data processes you’ve established to make sure the fix sticks.

Application

DMAIC is a data-driven improvement framework — use it when you have metrics to measure and a problem whose root cause isn’t obvious. Contrast with pdca-cycle, which is a lighter, faster improvement loop suitable for experimentation.

Fit: continuous improvement efforts during course-4-project-execution, especially quality management and process improvement work.
